THE HISTORY

In 1921, Abraham Tuschinski opened the Theater Tuschinski after two years of construction. Originally a dressmaker from Poland, he was on his way to the United States in 1904 but eventually stayed in Rotterdam, where he opened several cinemas.

In 1916, together with his brothers-in-law Herman Gerschtanowitz and Hermann Ehrlich, he wanted to start something special in Amsterdam.

‘Amsterdam has many theatres, but if I build one, it should far outshine all others. Grand as a temple and beautiful as a palace, a theatre that has no equal in Europe yet, and will make even the spoilt Amsterdam audience puff with admiration.’

This drive for originality and admiration was always at the forefront of Theatre Tuschinski: imitation of other theatres was out of the question for Abraham Tuschinski.

This is reflected in the many changes Tuschinski's interior went through and the many special elements that characterise the theatre. Under Tuschinski's reign, the theatre was never finished.

The Jewish Tuschinski was eventually murdered in Auschwitz on 17 September 1942. As a tribute to the founder of the Netherlands' finest theatre, Pathé has named this new bar especially after him: Bar Abraham.
